The American Film Institute is an organization that is extremely well respected within the film appreciating community. You might even know them as their lists summing up the best films in a variety of categories often air on TV. Their lists are generally considered stellar but this year I've got to say there are a couple of missteps. Below you will find their Top 10 for 2009. I've not seen one of the ten titles (THE MESSENGER) and as for the other nine, I'm displeased with three. The first two surprises for me are CORALINE and SUGAR. Both are fine films, in fact the former is actually quite spectacular visually, but I didn't think that either reached its full potential. The third bizarre entry is THE HANGOVER. This is a film that was loved by many but to call it one of the best of the year is the kind of mistake one makes the night before a hangover. These decisions are usually regrettable.
